Elements of occupational safety and health proposed by several organizations are summarized. The focus of this chapter is primarily safety and health aspects of work in the United States, but there is evidence that the benefits and …

chances to apply management methods beyond the boundaries of the state has increased. This is especially true with globalization efforts by the International Standards Organization (ISO) on quality management (ISO 9000 series) and environmental management (ISO 14000 series).
However, the most important aspects of performance management of occupational safety and health must be done with the organizational culture.Until the degree in which the safety, health and welfare of every individual in the organization is a core value is the degree to which the safety and health will be managed or handled properly. Thus, the challenge for the leadership of various organizations is to create and / or put these values and make it as a “way of doing things”. When this is done, use and apply the information contained in subsequent chapters become automatic and institutionalized.
One part of the Piper Alpha disaster report says, “Safety is not an intellectual exercise to make us keep working. Safety is about life and death. This is the amount of our contribution to safety management that determines whether the people who work with us live or die “.
